Tourism in Italy

Though Tuscany has so much to offer, a favorable exchange rate and cheap flights may be driving more tourists its way.

Information at the Italian Tourist Board indicates that Italy is the fifth most popular destination in the world in 2012, with tourists spending a little under €30.8 Billion using today’s exchange rate. The most popular activities included visiting historical and artistic sites, marine locations, lake resorts, mountain resorts, and resorts, and hill towns.

With places like Florence, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Piazza del Campo, Battistero di San Giovanni, Duomo di Siena, and Parco Naturale della Maremma, it is probably no surprise that Tuscany was the fourth most popular destination in the country with approximately 6.5 million arrivals.

Shifting Tourism Interests

An article written by Esther Addley, a senior writer for The Guardian, indicates that there may be a shift in interest. The number of visitors coming from the United Kingdom alone increased to 11.2 million in 2014. One possible cause for this increase is that the exchange rate of Italy is currently more favorable to tourists than other places like France or Germany.

Another possible reason driving interest for Italy is the cheaper airline ticket. A document prepared by Boeing indicated that the European Low Fares Airline Association reported a 7.2 percent increase in passengers over levels recorded in 2011. And while this has been a boon to places like Tuscany, travel advice found at parking4less.com cautions people about the cheap flights due to hidden or extra costs such as taxes not included in prices, infant charges, and online check-in fees.

With so many sights to see in Tuscany, it is no wonder that it ranks as the fourth most popular destination in Italy. Two possible reasons driving even more tourists its way are a favorable exchange rate and cheaper flights.
