Maremma Walking Festival

The Explore Maremma Walking Festival allows you to uncover magical and hidden places such as ruins, ancient places of worship, and fortresses in this part of southern Tuscany up to northern Lazio. The event is typically celebrated during one week in June and another week in September. On each day of the festival, a passionate local guide leads a free trail excursion, introducing visitors to the paths, sights and secrets of the territory.

The upcoming appointments are from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 September, and from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 September 2016.

 

16 September – The ghost town of Castro

Castro was an ancient city on the west side of Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio. It was destroyed at the conclusion of the Wars of Castro in the 17th century.

17 September – Between mysticism and magical waterfalls: Eremo di Poggio Conte

The hermitage of Poggio Conte is immersed in nature, on the shores of the Fiora River between deep gorges and volcanic rocks. It features a beautiful gothic portal chiseled out of the tuff rock.

18 September – Saturnia and the White River

Uncover the wildest and hidden part of Saturnia along the Albegna River and the ruins of Ponte Romano.

Meeting point: Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Saturnia – at 9.30 am
Duration: about 3 hours 1/2
Distance: 6 km

 

23 September – Etruscan Mysteries

Discover the world of the ancient Etruscans between Pitigliano and Sovana, along the “Vie Cave” roads carved into tufa rock.

Meeting point: Hotel Guastini in Pitigliano at 9:00 am
Duration: 3 hours
Distance: 12km
Difficulty: Medium

 

24 September – Mysticism in Monte Argentario 

Walk across the extraordinary flora of this promontory, admiring the breathtaking views of the lagoon. Pass by the Convent of the Padri Passionisti and learn about the work of art by painter Pietro Aldi of Manciano, Maremma.

Meeting point: parking lot at La Vivienda Restaurant in the Terrarossa area – at 9:30 am

25 September – from ancient Cosa to Caravaggio

Walk from the Roman ruins of Cosa on the beautiful hill in Ansedonia, through the Feniglia Pinewood Reserve where you will find a monument in honor of Caravaggio. Discover how this artist is related to Maremma.

Meeting point: Cosa in Ansedonia – at 10am
Duration: 5 hours (including the visit at the archaeologic site of Cosa)
Distance: 10km
Difficulty: Easy
